Bulky office goods
Office Furniture and Freight-Class Fulfillment
Updated October 2026
A filing cabinet takes up far more room than its weight suggests, and a desk often arrives in more than one carton. Pieces made from composite wood also carry formaldehyde records that have to travel with them.
Office furniture and freight-class fulfillment means storing and shipping bulky office goods whose shipping cost depends more on the space they take up than on their weight. Four parts of the work matter most:
- cartons sized to each piece
- parcel, LTL or FTL, chosen for each order
- keeping the formaldehyde records that composite wood carries (EPA TSCA Title VI and CARB Phase 2)
- checking that every carton of a multi-part piece ships together

Why furniture is different
Why a desk ships differently from a case of paper
A case of copy paper is cheap and heavy for its size. A desk is bulky and fairly light, so a carrier that prices by volume bills it on the room it fills. A box of pens and staples is a simple parcel order. A desk is billed on its size, often goes by truck as a less-than-truckload (LTL) or full-truckload (FTL) shipment, and may come in several cartons that all have to reach the buyer together.
So the work changes. We choose the carrier and service for each order, across parcel and freight, and pieces made from composite wood come with formaldehyde records that stay with the SKU.
How we handle it
Four things that shape a furniture order
What each of these costs for your pieces comes back with your quote.
1. Size usually sets the price more than weight
Carriers price bulky parcels on dimensional weight (DIM), a weight worked out from the carton's size. Office chairs and storage cabinets are large boxes with little weight in them, so they usually get billed on their size. We pack each piece in the smallest carton that still protects it, which leaves less empty space to pay for.
2. Freight class, LTL and FTL
LTL carriers sort shipments into freight classes by density, handling and how easily they stow. Bulky office furniture usually ends up in freight rather than standard parcel. Desks and chairs are typical, and shelving and shredders go the same way. For each order we choose parcel, LTL or FTL, looking for the lowest-cost option that suits the shipment, and oversized goods go out on pallets. We don't run trucks of our own. The team that packs the order books the load with a carrier we work with, and add services such as liftgate delivery when the receiving site needs them.
3. Orders that ship as several cartons
Plenty of furniture ships as several cartons, or as the main piece with a hardware pack and assembly parts. What goes wrong is a short delivery, like a desk that shows up without its legs or its screws. Our pickers scan every item's barcode. Before an order leaves, we check it against its bill of materials so all the cartons and parts go out together. We're a 3PL, not a manufacturer. We pack the finished pieces as they arrive, and we don't build, refinish or alter your furniture.
4. Formaldehyde records for composite wood
A lot of office furniture is made from particleboard, MDF or hardwood plywood. The EPA caps the formaldehyde those woods can release under TSCA Title VI, and the federal limits match California's CARB Phase 2. The rule falls on the product. The manufacturer certifies that it meets the limit, labels it, and keeps the records.
Our part is narrower. When a composite-wood SKU arrives, our receiving team checks that its label and certification record are there. We keep them with the SKU from receiving to shipping and don't strip them off. We don't test, certify or guarantee emission compliance. That stays with the manufacturer.
Where a warehouse helps
Three ways to bring the freight bill down
The size and weight of your furniture are settled before it reaches us. The box, the carrier and the distance are where a warehouse can save you money.
- A carton cut to the piece. Since size sets the rate on almost all furniture, a smaller box is often the most direct way to pay less.
- Parcel or freight, decided per order. We pick parcel, LTL or FTL for each order and don't default to one carrier, so a shipment can go the cheapest way that suits it. Our freight and LTL / FTL shipping service explains how we book carriers.
- Stock closer to your buyers. You can split your stock across our warehouses; as a network they reach 99.77% of the US in 1-3 day ground. A typical order then starts nearer the buyer, which can shorten the trip and lower its cost.
Before you sign
What to ask before you sign
Freight weighs more heavily on a furniture program than on most, so get specific answers about it. Ask any warehouse you're considering:
- who books LTL and FTL freight for your oversized SKUs, and how
- how they decide between parcel, LTL and FTL for each order
- how they size cartons to keep dimensional weight down
- how formaldehyde labels and certification records stay with each composite-wood SKU from receiving to shipping
- how they check multi-carton orders, so a short delivery doesn't turn into a return
We'll work out the freight costs for your catalog and volume and send them with your quote, rather than guess at them here.
Questions about shipping office furniture
How is office furniture fulfilled differently from boxed office supplies?
Office furniture is an oversized, freight-class category. Carriers typically bill a desk, chair or storage cabinet on the room it takes up, not on what the scale reads. So each piece is packed to its size and sent parcel, LTL or FTL, whichever suits the order, instead of being forced into one carton or onto one carrier.
What is freight class, and why does it matter for furniture?
Freight class is how less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers group shipments, by density, handling and how well they stow, and it helps set the LTL rate on bulky goods. Office furniture and storage take up a lot of room for their weight, which tends to move them out of parcel and into freight. Class and size drive the cost, so the main ways to manage the freight bill are a carton that fits the piece and the right carrier and service for each order.
How do you control dimensional-weight cost on bulky office furniture?
Furniture and storage take up a lot of room for their weight, so dimensional weight, not the scale, usually sets the rate. Where a piece can ship as a parcel, we pack it close to its size to keep the billed weight down. Larger pieces go parcel, LTL or FTL, chosen for each order with an eye on the lowest-cost option that suits the shipment. You can also keep stock in several of our warehouses, which can shorten the trip on a typical order.
How do you handle composite-wood furniture and formaldehyde rules?
Desks and shelving are often made from particleboard, MDF or hardwood plywood. The EPA caps the formaldehyde these can release under TSCA Title VI, and the federal limits match California's CARB Phase 2. The manufacturer certifies that its product meets them. We confirm the label and certification record are present when the goods arrive and leave them with the SKU until it ships. Emission testing, certification and any guarantee of compliance stay with the manufacturer, and we do none of them.
Do you offer LTL and FTL freight for oversized office items?
Yes. Desks and chairs can ship parcel, LTL or FTL, chosen order by order, and so can bulky items like shelving and shredders. Oversized units go on pallets. The same people who build the pallet book the load with a carrier we work with, so the booking is based on the pallet as it really is. Liftgate delivery and similar services are carrier add-ons booked with the load. Tell us what your buyers' receiving docks and offices need, and we'll book the load to match.
How do you make sure a multi-carton furniture order ships complete?
A lot of furniture comes as several cartons, or as a main piece plus hardware and assembly parts, and the risk is that one of them gets left behind. We track the stock by the unit, case and pallet, and every pick is checked against its barcode. Before the order ships, we check it against the bill of materials, so a desk shouldn't leave our dock missing its hardware pack or one of its boxes.
